Managing Boardroom Disharmony, September 2011
The 27th of September brought about an insightful discussion by Patrick Dunne of 3i Investments plc, on Managing Boardroom Disharmony. CWN members found themselves seated in a circle, listening and participating with Patrick, as he shared his boardroom experiences, laced with good humoured anecdotes. As fun as the format was, it certainly raised serious discussions regarding the political interplay that goes on behind closed doors. We found ourselves pondering on the level of honesty, integrity and strength of character demanded throughout the process of high level corporate strategy.
We came away thinking about the pros and cons of allowing one’s ego to get in the way, contemplating the various personalities that make up a boardroom – from the weak to the strong willed - and who manages to get the upper hand. Does the main influencer actually bring about strategies that are good for the company or for their personal interest? Just how much cooperation takes place behind closed doors and who ends up being the natural leader?
Other elements to consider were leadership styles, strategies to reach complex decisions, long and short term views and how they affect the overall process.
After the lively discussion, CWN members were served drinks and canapés as they moved on to socialise with one another. I am happy to say that our members found the experience most enjoyable, particularly because it was an intimate group of 14 women, giving them the opportunity to really get to know one another and genuinely interact in the talk.
This event was organised by the CWN’s Professional Development Committee.

CWN is a great mix. There are events that are serious, that cover topics that are new to me, and there are events that are fun. There are people from a range of sectors, some in the City, many not. There are also plenty of opportunities for collaboration and friendship.
