CWN – MANAGING ORGANISATIONAL POLITICS
6th March 2012 6pm - 8.30pm
Bank of New York Mellon Offices,
BNY Mellon Centre, 160 Queen Victoria Street.,
EC4V 4LA map • How comfortable are you dealing with ‘politics’ at work?
• How can you become more politically ‘savvy’ and develop
practical strategies for effective political behaviour?
Come along to this interactive session where we will consider ‘typical’ female and male attitudes to organisational politics and discuss a practical model which explores different behaviours and their implications.
Engaging in politics goes with the territory for men; they don’t have to decide to engage in politics … they do it naturally. Yet many women are suspicious and don’t want to ‘play’ politics.
Drawing upon the experiences and insights of Brook Graham, Diversity and Inclusion consultants, of having worked with high potential women in various sectors over many years, they believe there is a lack of understanding about what politics are and a need to reframe it a ‘win-win’ activity.
Lesley Brook and Jacey Graham are Directors of Brook Graham Limited, a global Diversity & Inclusion consultancy firm. A large part of their work is focussed on developing female talent pipelines in multi-national companies for top level positions.
Prior to setting up the company eight years ago, they both had successful corporate careers in financial services and the oil and gas sectors. Lesley has delivered sessions on Organisational Politics to groups of women globally and Jacey has written about it in two books (A Women’sPlace in the Boardroom and The Roadmap)
CWN - WILLFUL BLINDNESS OR THE WILLINGNESS TO OVERSEE THE OBVIOUS - BY MARGARET HEFFERNAN
7th March 2012 6.30pm-TBC
Edwin Coe LLP,
2 Stone Buildings, Lincoln's Inn, London,
WC2A 3TH map CWN are pleased to announce the new edition of Margaret Heffernan's book “Willful Blindness” - why we ignore the obvious at our peril - has been published in December 2011.
It was the only British business book to make the final shortlist of the Financial Times/Goldman Sachs Best Business Book award. In her book, Heffernan argues that the biggest threats and dangers we face are the ones we don’t see – not because they’re secret or invisible, but because we’re willfully blind. She examines the phenomenon and traces its imprint in our private and working lives, and within governments and organizations, and asks: What makes us prefer ignorance? What are we so afraid of? Why do some people see more than others? And how can we change?
Examining examples of willful blindness in News Corporation, the Catholic Church, the banking sector, Nazi Germany, Bernard Madoff’s investors, BP’s safety record, the military in Afghanistan and the dog-eat-dog world of subprime mortgage lenders, Heffernan demonstrates how failing to see—or admit to ourselves or our colleagues—the issues and problems in plain sight can ruin private lives and bring down corporations. She explores how willful blindness develops and then outlines some of the mechanisms, structures and strategies that institutions and individuals can use to combat it. In its wide use of psychological research and examples from history, Heffernan's book has been compared to work by Malcolm Gladwell and Nicholas Taleb.
