May 2007 - Re-inventing Yourself
On Tuesday 20th May, CWN met at the RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce). Our lively and informative evening began with wine and nibbles, followed by a guided tour of the RSA and a talk on the history of its grade 1 listed building. The highlight of our evening was our speaker, Noel Harweth, a non executive director of Anglo-Irish Bank, Logica, Royal and Sun Alliance Insurance and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation Europe, where she is deputy chairman. The subject of Noel’s discussion was the importance in today’s economy for business women of developing their core skills, and also their secondary and tertiary skills. Women, by their very nature, focus on striving to be the best at their primary skill. This is no longer enough - the days of the ‘job for life’ mentality have dissipated - and it is important for one’s employer to see the employee as a multi-skilled individual. Noel mentioned that the most successful people had changed careers sometimes five or even six times, gaining invaluable experience in each new role. Noel provided great feedback to all our members’ questions.
The RSA is currently offering CWN members the opportunity to join without paying a registration fee and without needing a proposer. This is an additional benefit of CWN membership. |
